Helping Recovery After Traumatic Brain Injury with Vitamin D3 in Nigeria
Principal Investigator: Professor Olufemi Idowu
Disease: Traumatic Brain Injury
Research Description: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) disproportionately impacts low and lower middle income countries like Nigeria due to delayed treatment, which focuses on stabilization and rehabilitation only. There is no accepted neurological treatment to improve recovery outcomes. Vitamin D3, a cheap available supplement, has shown to reduce inflammation and neurological damage, yet many Nigerians are vitamin D deficient, worsening TBI outcomes. This Phase II, randomized, controlled trial is assessing vitamin D3 on functional outcomes in TBI patients. If successful, this could provide a scalable, cost-effective treatment in resource-limited settings that reduces TBI-related disability.
