Building Therapeutic Options for Meniere’s Disease with Virtual Clinical Trials
Principal Investigator: Dr. Danny Xu
Disease: Meniere’s disease
Research Description: Meniere’s disease is a chronic condition marked by sudden episodes of vertigo, hearing loss, tinnitus, or ear fullness lasting 30 minutes to 12 hours that may lead to long-term deafness, balance disorders and/or mental health issues. No FDA-approved therapies currently exist for Meniere’s and there is an absence of robust biomarkers and laboratory models. This study is leveraging Idaho State University’s virtual clinical trial platform to screen real-world cross-sectional health databases to detect already approved drugs that could show an improvement in Meniere’s symptoms. Top candidates will be those linked to multiple core symptom improvements. A virtual follow-up study will be conducted using large longitudinal data to evaluate whether patients taking these top candidate drugs for any reason experienced better outcomes for their Meniere’s disease. If successful, the team may identify safe, approved treatments for future clinical research in Meniere’s disease.
